The Friendship Eco Tour is a very adventurous, but not physically limiting, specialized tour. We will visit three of the six Biosphere reserves in Cuba and have ample opportunity to learn about Cuban life.
En route, our 'on the bus seminars' will engage us in lively discussions of all aspects of Cuban life - social, cultural, political, historical, etc.
This tour is designed for people who like a little adventure. Your luggage should be light enough that you can handle it easily yourself. While the activities will not be unreasonably strenuous, you should be 'able-bodied.' You will always have the option of staying back at the hotel should you feel an activity is beyond your comfort level.
Flights into Varadero arrive - stay 1 night.
As we make our way toward Trinidad (3 nights), we will visit the Jardin Botanico, which many consider the most interesting botanical gardens in the world.
In 1901 Harvard University founded the gardens on an area of 9 square km. In 1997 Hurricane Lily hit the gardens hard. Remnants of the damage remain, although the restoration job has been remarkable.
We can also visit the Crocodile Farm in Boca de Guama, established as a result of the protection campaign launched after the revolution. Then, we will board a boat and head off to the Village of Guama, a replica Taino village comprising 32 life-size sculptures by Cuban artist Rita Longa.
The other two days in this area can include a visit to the City of Trinidad, a hike in the Topes de Collantes Mountains to a beautiful waterfall, a day on the beach .
Depart for Havana - (3 nights), hotel accommodation.
Free day to explore such sites as the Museum of the Revolution, Cathedral Square, Capitolio and Morro Castle and enjoy a walking tour of Old Havana.
Visit to the world-renowned cemetery and botanical garden
Depart for Pinar del Rio province, tobacco capital of Cuba (and the world, actually).
On our way, we will stop at Las Terrazas Cuba's first UNESCO sanctioned biosphere reserve, so declared in 1985. It started as a reforestation project in 1968. We will have time for lunch near La Moka Hotel, famous for being built around an existing tree. Two nights in Vinales, which boasts a spectacular view of Vinales Valley.
Depart for Maria la Gorda (4 nights). Activities of interest include snorkelling, diving, and exploring the Peninsula Guanahacabibes, which has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. We have arranged a special guided hike with a specialist from the ecological station.
Each day will feature an exciting and interesting event - part of the adventure.
We will venture back to Havana for one night, as it isn't possible to get to our next destination directly. We have planned a special dinner for our farewell to Havana.
